The two week wait rule for breast cancer is failing patients. The number of cancers detected in the two week wait population is decreasing, and an unacceptable proportion is now being referred via the routine route. If breast cancer services are to be improved, the two week wait rule should be reviewed urgently.

A new study shows that rates of death due to breast cancer among Israeli Ashkenazi women who carried either a BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene variant were no different to the rates for women who were non carriers.
The study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) and was the work of Dr Gad Rennert, of Clalit Health Services, National Cancer Control Center and Department of Community Medicine and Epidemiology, Carmel Medical Center, Haifa, Israel and colleagues also in Israel and Canada.

Post-menopausal Chinese women who eat a Western-style diet heavy in meat and sweets face a higher risk of breast cancer than their counterparts who stick to a typical Chinese diet loaded with vegetables and soy, a study found.
The researchers, writing on Tuesday in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention, tracked about 3,000 women in Shanghai, about half of whom were diagnosed with breast cancer.
